How do metal detection systems work?<\/summary>\n

A coil system generates a balanced electromagnetic field across the detector’s aperture. Product passes through, and any metal contaminant disturbs that field. The system flags the disturbance and triggers a reject, without contact and without slowing the line.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What metals can be detected?<\/summary>\n

Ferrous metals like iron and steel are easiest to catch. Non-ferrous metals and stainless steel are harder, since stainless has low magnetic permeability, but multi-frequency detectors are tuned specifically to catch stainless reliably alongside ferrous and non-ferrous contamination.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What is \u201cproduct effect\u201d and why does it matter?<\/summary>\n

Wet, salty, or mineral-rich foods \u2014 meat, cheese, spices \u2014 can themselves create a signal in the detector, which risks masking real contamination or causing false rejects. Multi-frequency and phase technology separates a genuine contaminant from the product’s own natural signal.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

How small a contaminant can be detected?<\/summary>\n

It depends on aperture size, product type, and metal type \u2014 smaller apertures and more uniform products allow finer sensitivity. Our pipeline detectors, for example, reach sensitivities as low as 0.5mm stainless steel on suitable product.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

How often should a metal detector be tested?<\/summary>\n

Certified test cards or test sticks with ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel spheres should be run through the detector on a set schedule \u2014 typically at shift start, at defined intervals during production, and at shift end \u2014 with every result logged for traceability.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Metal detection or X-ray inspection \u2014 which is right for my line?<\/summary>\n

Metal detectors are highly sensitive to metallic contamination and lower cost, and are the standard where metal is the main risk. X-ray inspection also catches other dense contaminants \u2014 glass, some stone, dense plastic, bone \u2014 and can check fill level and pack integrity, at a higher cost. Many lines run metal detection as standard and add X-ray where the risk profile calls for it.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Can metal detectors handle foil-wrapped or metallic packaging?<\/summary>\n

Standard detectors struggle here, since the metallic pack itself creates a constant signal that can mask real contamination. In-foil detection technology filters out the packaging’s own signal so genuine contaminants can still be found inside a sealed metallic pack.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Is metal detection required for BRC or GFSI-recognised certification?<\/summary>\n

Most BRCGS and other GFSI-recognised food safety standards require a documented critical control point for physical contamination, and metal detection (or X-ray) is the standard way producers meet that requirement, alongside routine testing records and a defined response procedure for a reject.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
